Five Stars, No Website: South Florida Company Is Building Sites for Top-Rated Local Businesses Before They Ask for One

Standard's opening campaign looks for the barbers, plumbers and family restaurants everyone recommends and nobody can find online — then builds the website and sends the owner a link to it.

A new South Florida company called Standard has started a campaign around exactly that gap. It is called Five Stars, No Website, and it works backwards from how websites are normally sold: Standard identifies local businesses with excellent public reputations and no website of their own, builds a complete site for the business, and only then contacts the owner with a private link to look at the finished result. There is no charge to look at it and no obligation attached.

"The owners we're looking for have already done the hard part," said Matthew Brian, founder of Standard. "Twenty years of good work and a wall of five-star reviews. What they don't have is a Saturday to spend writing website copy, which is what every quote they've ever been given actually asked of them."

Standard says the campaign is aimed at the businesses hardest to reach through the usual channels. In building its own research tools, the company found that the open mapping datasets commonly used to study local business coverage substantially undercount service trades — plumbers, electricians, roofers and similar operators who work out of a truck rather than a storefront — and that those datasets carry no customer ratings at all. The businesses with the best reputations and the least web presence are, by the company's account, also the ones least visible in the data.

The campaign carries its own limits, which Standard publishes. It will not invent anything about a business it has not verified — no reviews, no credentials, no services the business does not offer. Previews are private and are never presented as though the business has published them. And a domain bought for a customer is registered in that customer's name, with Standard listed only as technical contact.

"If someone looks at the site and says no, that's a real answer and we leave it there," Brian said. "We'd rather show a business what it could look like than talk to them about it."

Standard is running the campaign across South Florida first, and plans to expand to additional Florida markets.

Notes to editors

  • Standard is opening in South Florida; the founder is available for interview in person in Broward or Palm Beach County, or by phone.
  • The company can demonstrate the process end to end — including a site built live for a business of an editor's choosing — and can walk through its research method on the record.
  • Standard has no customer testimonials to offer and will not supply invented ones. Any customer example provided in future will be named, with that customer's permission.
